Pietermaritzburg Aero Club
by Telani Lithgow
Pietermaritzburg Aero Club is the oldest Flying Club in South Africa. Established in 1938 it was 75 years in existence in 2013.
Being "not-for-profit", but more as a service to members, Pmb Aero Club has very reasonable rates for training and hire-and-fly on the Clubs two C172's and C150.
Pmb is a relatively quiet area to train, which maximizes airborne time for training, and has a large General Flying Area close by, and yet has Air Link, SA Express, and Federal Airlines serving the airport, which boasts a 1537m tar strip, and facilities for Instrument and Night Ratings Training at the recently upgraded, modern yet manageable airport.
Both Manned and Unmanned procedures may be experienced at Pietermaritzburg Airport for a completely rounded training experience.
Pietermaritzburg, home to the Duzi and (depending on the year) being the start / end point for the Comrades Marathon, lies between Durban and the Midlands of KwaZulu Natal in easy reach of both the Indian Ocean and the Drakensberg Mountains.
